Luomo – Make My Day

I remember when I found out his name wasn’t Vladislav Delay. The man behind the pristine house of Luomo, the darker techno of Sistol, and the rhythmic explorations of Uusitalo shed a layer only to reveal another. Names set expectations, and the wariest artists switch between them often to avoid the trap of predestination. Sasu Ripatti has always put out his most pop work as Luomo, and though he usually throws in a deep house number, he’s gone full-bore diva on his fifth album, Plus. It’s an interesting take on the Chicago sound—he foregrounds the vocals of the Chicago Boys early on, but he stretches out the middle and end sections of these sprawling pieces, injecting the kind of keyboard vamps and percussive details that made “Slow Dying Places” the peak of his previous album Convivial. None of these takes are as brilliant as that song, though, and at times the album sounds a bit conventional. But I have a feeling that there’s a grower or two lurking here among the reeds.
