Lo-Fi-Fnk – Shut the World Out

The end of summer has animated pop music since the early 20th century, and by the end of the ’60s the theme had been addressed to perfection. But it still inspires from time to time, as with the newest release from Swedish pop duo Lo-Fi-Fnk. You’d expect something portentous from a title like The Last Summer, but their second album is more of a reflection on times past, the black-and-white cover a clear homage to the spit and polish of the Pet Shop Boys’ art design. In particular, it underscores the “counting shop, taking stock” mode of lead single “Being Boring” from Behaviour, but of course Lo-Fi-Fnk aren’t at that point in their career and they don’t have the humble lyrical brilliance of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. (To be fair, who does?) Musically, The Last Summer is closer to the good-natured pan-generalism of Cut Copy, but more subdued and introspective, as illustrated by “Shut the World Out.”
