Craft Spells were featured here last year after the release of their winsome debut album. Now they’re back with a new 12″ on Captured Tracks, Gallery, and their sound has shifted a bit. They’re rendered in a rawer, more lo-fi way that harkens back to those early New Order singles on Movement—the underlying melancholy in these songs emphasizes just how fragile their hope and optimism are. There isn’t a standout quite as compelling as “After the Moment” or “From the Morning Heat,” but it’s a nice collection nonetheless, and they’re still toying around with the placement of drum tracks and layers of guitar.
