Matthew Dear was anointed a duke of techno pop a bit too early. 2003′s Leave Luck to Heaven was good for a debut but rough and clumsy around the edges. To his credit, in the years since Dear has learned not only to sing but how to write a fully compelling tune, and his 2010 album Black City was one of the year’s best. Now he’s released the Head Cage EP as a lead-up to the full-length Beams. These four songs bring you more of the same diffuse, confident pop, which isn’t a bad thing. “In the Middle” features The Drums’ Jonny Pierce.
