Machinedrum – U Don’t Survive

Beginning and ending the week with SHPDBM—sample-heavy post-dubstep bass music, of course. You could call it burialism, bass revival, methodist garage, but there’s no denying that a lot of post-dubstep dance music has worked back toward the house spectrum, though still keeping a reverence for broken rhythm. What’s gratifying is seeing a guy like Machinedrum succeed so thoroughly with this. He debuted with some fairly standard instrumental hip-hop typical of the post-IDM early 2000s, and now he’s killing it, both as Sepalcure and as Machinedrum with one of the best entries in the post-dubstep continuum of the last few years. Room(s) is a phenomenal statement of intent, a relentlessly evolving exploration of jiggered groove that sacrifices none of its swing to the excursion. This will be high up on my list of best albums of the year.
