Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland – Black Is Beautiful

Hype Williams were featured here about this time last year. Not too surprisingly, they’ve switched to their given names to promote their new album, Black Is Beautiful. It feels like missing the point to expect more from them—anything but massively blunted canoodling would be a surprise, a shift away from their MO. But their choice of label kinda causes some head scratching. Hyperdub may not be at the forefront of bass music these days, but the hallmark of an HDB artist is canny, self-contained rigor. I’d like to see the duo collaborate or bring in a new member to guide their craft or unmoor them even further—think about the promise of a combo with, say, Mo Kolour, Ayshay, or more appropriately for their interest in cultural detritus, James Ferraro.
