Chrysta Bell – Swing With Me (Prod. by David Lynch)

For David Lynch, art’s most erotic subject is a woman in distress. This is evident; he’s traced the theme for far too long. In some ways I’m surprised he hasn’t done a Super-8 short of a woman crying and shuddering in fear for five to ten minutes straight. But you can thank the midwest for another inspiration he’s been blending into the mix for many years: the rhythm of machinery. That aesthetic fascination informs a good deal of his work, from shots of power generators humming and film reels whirling to his Industrial Symphony pieces. It even infuses the textures of his more nominally sensual neo-noir film scores for Twin Peaks and, now, his collaboration with singer Chrysta Bell. Listen to the machine shuffle of the percussion on “Swing With Me” and you’ll hear metal siding scraping the house in the wind, trains chugging from across the valley. The question, as always, is whether his femmes fatale can be more than canvasses for the projection of dark urges craving redemption.
