Lines in the sand:
No ego. No star worship. Songs come first, then maybe a musician or an album if they’re lucky. A good song is a singular achievement, worth noting.
No full album downloads. ROOT is about promoting artists who deserve compensation for their work. I will always post a link to buy a song when it’s available.
Always about lyrics. I don’t get the lyrically agnostic. If the words are bad, the song’s unplayable.
Make mixes. Mix tapes are new worlds. They’re a personal touch. They’re history books. Saw a comment on a forum once –“Can’t believe you guys make titles and covers for your playlists” – and felt a blot on my soul. Poor guy.
Let’s write. Picking at the scab on the collective unconscious, still embarrassed by all that bruised purple prose from way back when. Resist the automated RIYL script evolving on the web – upload album, copy and paste a description someone else wrote, hit publish. Not my idea of a music blog.
