Lo-fi really is the shit in electronic music right now, and I can’t keep from lifting the lid and smelling what’s bubbling in the pot: muddy, brackish soundwashes; synthesizer lines that seem to decay in issuance; hazy, ramshackle drum patterns; an urge to look forward by peeling back the layers of VHS tape like so much gray matter. Walsh has a thing not so much for the actual 80s but for our collective memories of the era, and he’s offering his album Back 2 the High Life for free on Bandcamp. As the title track shows here, he’s sketching with the same mottled ink as the Not Not Fun label.
