I feel like Zach Hill must be spiritual bros with Bill Laswell. They’re both badasses on their respective instruments (drum, bass), and their career arcs embody eclecticism. On his most recent project, Hill’s working with Andy Morin and Stefan Burnett on some seriously spazzed out, vibrant punk-rap. Think Dalek or Material’s Intonarumori but with synths like neon birds squawking out the daylights. It’s weird that some people seem thrown off by Burnett’s vocals, as if he’s doing something new—it’s the opposite, an old-school lo-fi dismissal of the microphone, like how could it be puny words you really need to blow the bad vibes out your chest? Death Grips are all tone and it’s raw.
