Light Asylum – Angel Tongue

For most of the 2000s, there wasn’t much overlap between the indie scene and the goth/industrial/synthpop realms. Chalk it up to a hangover from the overly angsty 90s, I guess. But interest in all things new wave has burgeoned in the last few years, in the wake of a number of groups that have found ways to evoke the synthesized without the baggage of a dead scene, from the schizophrenic voice of The Knife to a clutch of lo-fi shroudmongers like Blank Dogs and The Soft Moon. But the (finally!) soon-to-be-released debut album from Light Asylum might challenge newcomers. It harkens backward to the unabashed, heart-on-sleeve lyrics of the Wax Trax era—at one point on “Pope Will Roll,” Shannon Funchess actually belts out “Charge me like a credit caaaard.” I’m digging the album but wish that there had been a few of the slower, more revealing numbers like “A Certain Person” (which opens the mix here). “Angel Tongue” is one such ballad and it’s a beauty.
