Tanlines – Rain Delay

It would be easy to tag Tanlines as a product of chillwave’s balmy air. But for all the buoyancy of their rhythms, ultimately Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm are more introspective; they breathe a sad summer pop. It’s a wistful gloss on youth shared by Lo-Fi-Fnk, and it longs to emulate the humble sophistication of the Pet Shop Boys. Their most upbeat numbers have a hint of the Balearic sound revival, but their best work is slower and more contemplative, working with Emm’s imperfect voice rather than trying to turn it into something it’s not. Their new album Mixed Emotions might have the most no-duh name since Wild Mood Swings, and I find myself wishing that they would work a little harder on lyrics and arrangements.
