Florence + the Machine – Spectrum

“Rabbit Heart” was a phenomenal single. You mix pop with ancient mythology and I’m all yours. Florence Welch hasn’t abandoned that urge to carve into the flesh on her new album; if anything, she’s possessed by the concept, from the album title (Ceremonials) to the blood and pulp coursing through her imagery. To her credit, she’s abandoned the dense and overwrought orchestration of her first album, which was too concerned with ornamentation to simply let her rhythms flow. That theme—a release from constraints, shackles, life—runs through the album, from the choir-in-reverse of “Lover to Lover”  to the spooky mid-album reliquary of “Seven Devils,” and of course lead single “Shake It Out.” Naturally, the release is on All Hallow’s Eve.
