Mika Vainio has come full circle. It’s only appropriate for a guy who’s recorded under the name Ø. He played in the Finnish industrial noise scene for years before joining Ilpo Väisänen as Pan Sonic. And Pan Sonic’s work always paid strong attention to tone: harsh, barbed, serrated, abrasive. On his new solo album Life (… It Eats You Up), his long-form compositions move back toward searing noise and speaker-rattling drones. Here he turns the Stooges’ “Open Up and Bleed” into a slowly spinning buzzsaw advancing inexorably.
