m83 – Midnight City

It’s rarely acknowledged that the m83 vessel goes unpiloted. Launched back in 2001, the streamlined craft set sail for the spiral Messier 83, and one crew pod containing Nicolas Fromageau was soon jettisoned. Anthony Gonzalez was thought to be at helm, but the machine perfectionism of Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts made it clear: No human input needed. Thus it was all the more strange when Saturdays = Youth appeared as a liquifaction of the dreams of its host, each vapor an attempt to distill the feeling of a John Hughes film. Spoken word interludes, New Romantic posturing—was something wrong with the cryogenic system? Was it a perfect accident that a Frenchman balanced so precariously between syrupy kitsch and good-natured camp? We may have an answer in this new-found transmission, “Midnight City.” The melody mimics the last album’s “Kim and Jessie,” but we’ll take another tour on autopilot if the journey’s this bright and fuzzy.
