Hard work pays off. When Dark Rift took off in 2009, it was easy to think of it as Travis Egedy’s first outing, but he’d been releasing material for half a decade at that point. I had trouble getting into that album’s sound—it signaled the return to ’90s rave in a big way, but like Ariel Pink’s bastard pop, it scribbled all over everything. Messy works for rock and roll, but I had trouble with Pictureplane’s profusion of ideas. Now, with the upcoming release of his new album, he’s focused for once and it all pays off. Thee Physical is a sex album for a new century, a loosely themed collection of intimate, post-geometrical erotics. All kinds of adjectives get tossed his way—trance, goth, breaks—but at his heart, Egedy is an unabashed raver. As you make your way through the forest of samples and glam synth, you catch glimpses of his PLUR manifesto, all post-gender, trans-physical energy and enthusiasm. The singularity’s near, so open your mind, lose your words, and melt with him. (Check “Trancegender” for a secret guest spot from Zola Jesus.)
