From Stockton, California, a band name that conjures many memories of the awkward years, rolling dice and navigating pixel forests in games that look hopelessly outdated these days. Like Radio Dept., Justin Vallesteros and company are expert fetishists of the fey—shoegaze, C86, that mannered British pop sound. Idle Labor is amazingly consistent for a debut album, a springtime’s worth of flirtation, yearning, and stymied affections. Check out the boy/girl harmonies on “From the Morning Heat.”
