2010 Marginalia

A selection of my favorite mixes from the year:

CFCF – Slo Rida Mix Pt 2. People were talking up his Do U Like Night Bus? mix, which ended up on Fader, and I’ll admit that the Aguirre/Go/Push Upstairs suite is great. But the chopped and screwed sound’s stale unless you’re from Houston and the whites of your eyes are stained the color of Grimace’s ass. To put it another way, the technique has been chained to the sound of slowed-down rappers by white dudes for long enough now that it all sounds like Moby’s Play to these ears. Slo Rida Pt. 2 beams through with a slow, steady headlight beam, and hidden back in ether murk is the Cars and … well, half the fun is figuring it out.

Billy Rockwell – What is Past is Prologue (mix for Voules Random)

Evil Nine – VHS Halloween Party Pt. 3. ‘Nuff said.

Girl Unit – Mix for Nmbrs. Night slugs so low they know how to get down.

Ikonika – Mary Anne Hobbs Radio 1 Mix. Hyperblind palette correction orgasm. Timeless for the 21st century.

Korallreven – A Dream. Ties the knot between blissful and yearning.

Maya Vanya - Around the World. Croatians do the humpty hump to a casual blitzkrieg of riddims.

Nguzunguzu – Mirage EP. Like sipping caffeine bug juice, flitting fireflies behind your closed eyelids.

Pocketknife – Presents EXTRA ALCHEMY. Every time you play this seance we bring Trish Keenan closer to back.
